Our Grants At Work On The Ground: Homewood Community Farmers Market

Jan 6, 2017

The Homewood Community Farmers Market launched in June 2016 as a solution to Homewood and surrounding communities’ lack of access to healthy food choices.

raqueeb-and-friendLast year, we awarded a grant to the Black Urban Gardeners and Farmers of Pittsburgh Co-Op to establish a farmers market in Homewood. The market provides the community with the opportunity to shop locally for high quality fresh produce at reduced rates while supporting local gardeners and farmers.

With partnerships in place with organizations like the Homewood YMCA, The Pittsburgh Chamber of Cooperatives, Grow Pittsburgh and 412 Food Rescue (among others), residents attending the market raqueebare also engaged in learning activities that educated them on cooperative models, healthy cooking instruction, sustainability methods and various existing community organizations.

The Black Urban Gardeners and Farmers of Pittsburgh Co-Op is proud of their ability to take food security into their own hands and not rely on outside development to bring in a solution. Additionally, this model was so successful that the collective has been asked to replicate the market in additional city neighborhoods this year.

Be sure to check out the next Homewood Farmers Market to be held in February to commemorate Black History Month and then again, when it opens later in the year for the spring and summer seasons!raqueeb-and-mayor-peduto
