From Vision to Action: Creating a Creative Analytic Play Space in the Hilltop

Sep 6, 2024

Last summer, our Social Impact Design team partnered with The Brashear Association, Inc. and South Pittsburgh residents to co-design a Creative Analytic Play Space (CAPS) to be built in a vacant lot across from the Brashear CARES Center.

Our team worked alongside seniors and youth from the South Hilltop communities to bring a community vision to life–engaging over 100 residents in a series of inspirational design exercises and feedback sessions that were used as the foundation to create a final design document that Brashear can use as a guide for the development of the site.

“Working with the Social Impact Design team has been an amazing experience.  While working with our staff and the community, they were patient with the seniors, had fun engaging the kiddos and made this project come to life through effective community engagement.”

-Andrea Matthews, Executive Director, The Brashear Association, Inc.

It’s been one year since SID delivered the final designs, and we’re ecstatic to share that the Brashear Association has successfully leveraged $1,075,000 in funding, including $75k from ARPA via the URA and a $1 million RACP grant.

This is a testament of the effectiveness of SID’s approach and the resulting designs in fundraising. With this positive momentum, Brashear has decided to prioritize the “Community Dream” CAPS project, with architects already contracted for the next development phase.

Originally, this project was constrained by a $500k budget, but after our budget-specific meetings, we worked with our community partners to expand the scope to include a $1.1 million “Community Promise” phase and a $2.5 million “Community Dream” phase, the latter now being the focus.

To make this dream a reality, the community needs more support! Help us bring this transformative project to life by donating today. Your contribution will directly impact the development of the CAPS and create a lasting space for creativity and community engagement. Donations can be made at this link: Donate Now!

“The Creative and Analytic Play Space not only activates unused green spaces in the Hilltop, it is a unique place for the young, the young at heart and our beloved Seniors where they can stay active, build connections, and live healthier lives.”

-Andrea Matthews, Executive Director, The Brashear Association, Inc.
