We are so very proud to call the Buhl Foundation our ally, supporter and partner as we work together to better the well-being of the citizens of Pittsburgh.
Henry Buhl, Jr. built his fortune in the retail industry and created the Buhl Foundation, the first multi-purpose foundation in Pittsburgh, with the mission of creating community legacies by leveraging its resources to encourage people and organizations to dream, to innovate and to take action. More recently, the Foundation has engaged in an extensive planning effort with the Northside community to find consensus around key needs and the strategies to address them.
Remembering that Henry Buhl, Jr. lived and worked on the Northside of Pittsburgh, and knowing his love for Pittsburgh and its people, the Buhl Foundation’s new outreach focused on a key question: “What does it take to lead a dignified life?” While mindful of its historic focus on education, youth development, human services and economic and community development, the Foundation allowed a community driven decision making process, informed by primary and secondary date, to be built upon a long term (20 year) commitment of resources. The result is a flexible, transparent community plan focused on insuring that the quality of life improves for all residents of the Northside.
Buhl Foundation Vice-President Diana Bucco noted that “One of our core values is to put people into a position to create solutions to the problems they see in their lives and communities. Everything we do ought to generate self-sufficiency.” Since adopting this place based strategy some 18 months ago, Buhl has invested more than 5 million dollars in advancing the agreed upon community priorities of the Northside.
A 2016 grant from the Buhl Foundation is supporting and assisting struggling individuals and families through our Financial Opportunity Center (FOC) at Northside Common Ministries.
“Having partners such as Neighborhood Allies who really understand what is happening in neighborhoods throughout the City allows us the opportunity to be in touch with the best evidence based practices in community development.”
-Fredrick Thieman, Buhl Foundation President
