Like so many other things, the Real Estate Co-powerment Series looked a little different during 2020; yet, that didn’t stop us from equipping community members with the knowledge and skills to be involved in the development happening in their communities. Omicelo Cares taught courses virtually amid the pandemic, and thus provided 68 more passionate individuals with valuable real estate knowledge and a support network that enables them to become active and meaningful participants in their community’s revitalization.

The Real Estate Co-Powerment Series has graduated 9 cohorts over 5 years, with over 90% of participants identifying as African-American and 55% of participants identifying as women. During this time, average course sign-ups have increased by 300% with a recurring waiting list. Over 50 real estate investment properties have been purchased by graduates.

Additionally, graduates of the Real Estate Co-Powerment Series are now also offered a year of free membership to the Urban Land Institute (ULI) – the oldest and largest network of cross-disciplinary real estate and land use experts in the world whose mission is to shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide. 13 (and counting) recent and past graduates have received this membership as a result of a new partnership between Neighborhood Allies, Omicelo Cares, and ULI!
Registration for TWO 2021 cohorts is now OPEN! The series will be held in the Elliot and Garfield neighborhoods from September 7th through October 21st and October 26th through December 16th, respectively. The first 15 spots are reserved for residents and business owners of the neighborhood where the course will take place, while 10 additional spots are available for the broader community. About the Real Estate Co-Powerment Series
The Real Estate Co-Powerment Series is an education platform co-created by Neighborhood Allies and Omicelo Cares designed to demystify the real estate development process, explain its associated terminology and bring to light the productive role community members and organizations play in real estate and economic development in their own neighborhoods. An overarching goal of the series is to shrink the technical proficiency gap that exists between real estate developers and community leaders that are involved in local development projects. We hope to create long-term, working relationships between private developers, real estate experts, community based organizations, business owners and active community members so that residents can be involved in the development happening in their communities.
