Steel Smiling Earns Two Major Awards as They Prepare to Celebrate 10 Years of Impact

Nov 19, 2025

As Steel Smiling marks its tenth anniversary this year, the organization is receiving two powerful recognitions that reflect the depth of its impact and the strength of its commitment to mental wellness across Pittsburgh.

Recently, Steel Smiling was named Organization of the Year and will be honored in March 2026 at the 6th Annual Social Worker Appreciation of Greatness (SWAG) Awards for their leadership in expanding access to culturally responsive mental-health support and training Black mental-health advocates through their signature programs. They were also presented with a Community Service Award from the South Pittsburgh Coalition for Peace for their work supporting the Community Violence Reduction Initiative Wellness Project, in partnership with the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.

These awards highlight what so many across Pittsburgh already know: Steel Smiling is reshaping how mental-health support is accessed, understood, and experienced in Black communities—through trusted relationships, peer leadership, and healing-centered programming.

Neighborhood Allies is proud to host Steel Smiling as our Organization-in-Residence, a partnership rooted in our shared belief that mental wellness is foundational to people and places thriving. Through this model, we provide operational support and organizational infrastructure that allow Steel Smiling to focus on what they do best—building relationships, nurturing peer leaders, and creating pathways to positive mental-health experiences for Black Pittsburghers. At the same time, Steel Smiling plays a vital role in sustaining wellness within our own team by facilitating sessions, creating space for reflection and healing, and helping us cultivate a work culture grounded in care and belonging.

Our partnership also extends into the broader community, where we collaborate on initiatives that bring mental-health support to residents, frontline workers, and community-serving organizations across Pittsburgh. Together, we work to ensure that healing and emotional wellbeing are treated as essential components of equitable community development.

On December 11, Steel Smiling will celebrate 10 years of impact, bringing together community members, partners, and supporters to honor a decade of healing, advocacy, and relationship-building. This milestone is both a celebration and an invitation—to continue supporting a future where every Black person has access to at least one positive mental-health experience, and where community wellness is recognized as a pathway to community power.

As Steel Smiling moves into its next decade, we are proud to walk alongside them—celebrating their achievements, supporting their growth, and championing the healing-centered vision that continues to strengthen our region.
