After a hiatus since 2022, the Real Estate Co-Powerment Series made a successful relaunch this summer, engaging 26 participants with an impressive 81% completion rate, as 21 students either attended all sessions or utilized recorded content to maintain active involvement. With a waitlist of four people already eager for the next cohort, the relaunched series, spanning from May 7th to June 6th, explored 14 essential topics including Proforma, Intro to Construction, Architectural Design & Community Engagement, Operations (Landlord).
Energizing Kickoff | The series began with powerful opening remarks from Joshua Pollard, co-founder and board member, who provided an insightful introduction to real estate and detailed the origins of the Co-Powerment Series. This was complemented by Tammy Thompson’s engaging discussion on the ‘money mindset,’ setting a motivational tone for the series.
Inspirational Instructors and Engaging Content | Gene Boyer’s introduction to construction and Tom Hardy’s financial insights using proformas were highlights, providing participants with practical knowledge and tools. The sessions not only enriched learning but also spurred interest among students for more advanced “300 level” courses.
Spotlight on URA’s Outstanding Presentation | The discussion led by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) proved to be a pivotal part of the series, offering an in-depth look at the various programs available to developers. This session significantly changed the participants’ perspectives on the URA, enhancing their understanding of how they can leverage these resources to facilitate their own development projects.
Community Collaboration and Empowerment | Energized by their learning experience and new perspectives on community resources, class members have already started collaborating on projects, showcasing the practical application of their acquired knowledge and the series’ emphasis on collective empowerment. This active collaboration underscores the series’ success and the participants’ commitment to applying their skills.
Practical Applications and Community Impact | Our members are not just learning—they’re acting. Armed with new tools and insights, they are tackling both large and small development projects. Several participants have begun acquiring multiple-unit properties and initiating ground-up mixed-use developments. Some have also taken initiative with the Land Bank, applying for properties and starting to translate their learning into tangible community improvements.
Looking Ahead | The palpable enthusiasm, active collaborations among members, and the measurable impact of this relaunched series, alongside an emerging waitlist for the next session, underscore the importance of continuing and expanding our educational offerings. With plans to expand the Co-Powerment Series into new topics and markets, we are setting the stage for a broader impact. We look forward to not only continuing but also enhancing this series with deeper and more detailed content. The fall course is currently in the planning stages, and we are eager to welcome both new and returning participants.
