Neighborhood Allies proudly joined community members, partners, and elected officials to celebrate the groundbreaking of Herron Village, a new affordable housing development set to bring high-quality homes and renewed opportunity to Pittsburgh’s Hill District spearheaded by Ms. Tonya Ford, a longtime Hill District community member. Phase 1 of the Herron Village project will create five affordable housing units and a laundromat on the first floor and Phase 2 will add seven more units and a space for a beauty salon.
Through our Neighborhood Capital Program, we provided $33,000 in predevelopment grant funding, helping to move the project from vision to reality. We also supported lead developer, Tonya Ford with her successful Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) application, securing critical financing for the development. In response to Ms. Tonya’s request, our Social Impact Design team also created a beautifully rendered floor plan of the future apartments—displayed during the groundbreaking reception and soon to be used in tenant outreach. This in-kind contribution offered both practical value and design clarity, especially appreciated by the architects at citySTUDIO.
These small but strategic contributions reflect how Neighborhood Allies goes beyond funding—adding capacity, strengthening partnerships, and reinforcing equity in the development process. By offering hands-on support where it’s needed most, we help community-driven projects like Herron Village succeed and thrive.
We look forward to watching Herron Village take shape and to continuing our role in building equitable, thriving neighborhoods across Pittsburgh.
